Tens of Thousands of Trump Supporters Gather in Milwaukee for Republican National Convention Amid High Tension
Tens of thousands of Donald Trump supporters are gathering today, Monday, in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, held amid intense tension following an assassination attempt that nearly cost the former U.S. president his life.
The 78-year-old businessman, who arrived in the city on the shores of Lake Michigan, is expected to receive a warm welcome from his supporters.
The chosen venue for the convention is a large, modern sports complex, its walls adorned with large images of the 45th President of the United States, who is aiming to become the 47th.
However, the image that has been imprinted in everyone's minds and spread worldwide is that of Donald Trump raising his fist with blood covering his ear as his personal guards whisked him away from a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
A Surreal Experience
In an interview with the New York Post from his plane en route to the Republican National Convention, Trump said, "I was supposed to be dead."
The newspaper reported that Trump recounted a "surreal experience" while wearing a white bandage covering his right ear.
He continued that if he had not tilted his head slightly to the right to read a chart about undocumented immigrants while delivering his speech at the rally, he would have been killed.
"By sheer luck or the grace of God, many say I am still here because of God's will," Trump said.
The attack has shocked an increasingly polarized American society and has deepened the anger of Trump's most extreme supporters, who openly blame the Democrats for what happened.
Choosing the Vice President
The highlight of Monday's Republican National Convention will be the announcement of Donald Trump's running mate if he wins the election scheduled for November 5.
Three names are in contention for the position: J.D. Vance, the author who was elected to Congress; North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum; and influential Florida Senator Marco Rubio.
After the selection on Monday, the Republican vice-presidential candidate will deliver a speech on Wednesday evening in the convention's main hall.
The main themes of the convention will be purchasing power, immigration, crime, and security guaranteed by a strong state. The climax of the event will be Thursday when Donald Trump will be officially named the Republican candidate for the presidential election.
The convention's slogan is "Make America Great Again," Donald Trump's campaign slogan from the 2016 election.
The Republican arrived in this Great Lakes city on Sunday, but he kept his schedule secret due to security concerns.
With more than 50,000 attendees, the event is expected to be under tight security, especially considering Saturday's assassination attempt.
A large fence has been erected around the downtown area, guarded by Secret Service agents, who emphasized on Sunday that they are "fully prepared" to ensure security at the Republican National Convention. However, the Secret Service has been heavily criticized and accused of not providing adequate protection for Donald Trump during the outdoor rally on Saturday.
Experts estimate that the attack on Donald Trump could benefit him electorally, citing the precedent of Ronald Reagan, who survived an assassination attempt in 1981.
