Moroccan Anticipation Grows as Israeli Oil Tanker Nears Mediterranean Waters

A sense of anticipation prevails in Morocco as an Israeli oil tanker approaches the Mediterranean waters, coming from the United States. The tanker is expected to reach Moroccan territorial waters on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, after departing from Texas on July 15.

Moroccan activists have expressed concerns that Moroccan authorities might allow the tanker to dock at the port of Tangier in northern Morocco. This comes especially after Spanish reports revealed that Madrid had refused to let an Israeli oil tanker dock at one of the ports in Algeciras, located on the Mediterranean coast.

On Monday, July 29, 2024, the Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Against Normalization issued a statement warning the Kingdom's authorities against allowing the new Israeli ship to navigate Moroccan territorial waters or dock at any of its northern ports. In their statement, the front said, "The Israeli ship (Overseas Santorini) is expected to reach the Mediterranean waters on Tuesday, July 30, after departing from Texas, USA, on July 15, 2024."

The front praised the decision by Spanish authorities to prevent an Israeli oil tanker, specialized in transporting military fuel used to power the F-16 and F-35 aircraft of the Israeli army, from docking at any of its ports. This was achieved following continuous efforts by the international campaign "No Ports for Genocide Supporters."

The front called on Moroccan authorities not to allow the ship to navigate "in our territorial waters or dock at our ports, especially at Tangier Med Port," as they had previously done with the Israeli military ship "Komemiyut."

The front also urged its Tangier branch, along with all its other branches, components, and unions present at Tangier Med Port, to mobilize and closely monitor the ship's course. They emphasized the importance of exposing the ship and taking necessary initiatives to prevent it from docking at Moroccan ports.
