Turkey and Syria earthquake... the death toll exceeds 11,000, and rescue operations are entering a critical phase

Searches continue for survivors among the rubble, two days after the earthquake that killed more than 11,000 people in Turkey and Syria, and displaced countless numbers in the bitter cold.

The World Health Organization fears that the number of victims may reach 20,000, and has estimated the number of people affected by the earthquake at 23 million.

In Turkey alone, the death toll from the earthquake reached 8,574, according to statements made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan upon his arrival in Kahramanmaraş this afternoon, Wednesday, and the number of injured rose to 40,910.

The disaster management said that about 100,000 search and rescue personnel are working in the affected areas, and the authorities indicated that the coming hours are crucial to rescuing those trapped in the rubble.

The presidential decision to implement a state of emergency for a period of 3 months in the affected areas came into force, after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country was facing the largest disaster in its history

Meanwhile, the number of earthquake victims across Syria rose to 2,802, bringing the total death toll in the two countries to more than 11,000.

The civil defense teams - known as the White Helmets - in northern Syria said that the number of casualties is likely to rise, in light of the difficulties in reaching some affected areas, the lack of capabilities and heavy equipment, and the cold weather.

The Civil Defense indicated that more than 375 buildings have completely collapsed, more than 1,200 buildings have partially collapsed, and thousands of other buildings have been cracked.
